Can Dehydration Increase the Risk of Cellulite?
How much water do you drink in a typical day? Staying hydrated is important for many reasons. It lubricates your joints, assists the digestive system, supports the formation of new muscle tissue and more. Unfortunately, though, it’s estimated that three-quarters of Americans don’t drink enough water. When you are chronically dehydrated, you may notice certain changes occurring to your skin, including the formation of cellulite.
Affecting more than 98% of all women, cellulite is a common skin condition that’s characterized by the herniation of subcutaneous fat underneath the skin. Normally, this fatty tissue remains below the skin and its connective tissue. With cellulite, however, it pushes upwards and into the skin, creating the appearance of dimpling. Cellulite doesn’t cause any medically concerning issues, but it’s still something that most women want to avoid.
The Importance of Staying Hydrated
Staying hydrated can reduce your risk of developing cellulite in several ways. First, it curbs your appetite so that you’ll less likely to overeat. People who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop cellulite than their counterparts because they contain a greater percentage of body fat. By drinking water, you’ll naturally curb your appetite to promote a healthy weight.
Second, water is found throughout your body, including your skin. When you don’t drink enough of it, though, your body will “pull” water from areas where it’s stored. When this occurs, your body may extract water from your skin so that its vital organs and systems can function properly. Your skin will then lose its elasticity while becoming drier and more susceptible to cellulite in the process.
Tips to Prevent Chronic Dehydration
If you’re among the majority of Americans who are chronically dehydrated, you should make a few lifestyle changes to ensure that you are drinking enough water to protect against cellulite.
Ideally, you should consume at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Whether you’re lounging at home, working in the office, or driving in the car, bring a bottle of water with you. With a readily accessible supply of water, you’ll have an easier time staying hydrated. Also, avoid drinking too much coffee and caffeinated beverages. There’s nothing wrong with a single cup of coffee in the morning, but too much caffeine may leave you dehydrated, even if you drink plenty of water.
Staying hydrated alone won’t necessarily prevent cellulite. Rather, it can lower your risk of developing this otherwise common skin condition.
