The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to reevaluate your skincare regimen. If you regularly suffer from skincare problems like dryness, itching, redness, irritation, acne, etc., making small changes to your regimen may have a big impact on the appearance and health of your skin. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a list of seven essential skincare tips to ring in the new year.

#1) Remove Makeup Before Going to Bed

Try to get into the habit of removing your makeup before going to bed at night. Sleeping with cosmetic products on your face will clog your pores and increase the risk of blemishes. Using a gentle facial cleanser, remove your makeup at night to prevent this from happening.

#2) Drink Green Tea

Green tea has been used for centuries to treat and prevent a variety of ailments, including skin problems. It contains several powerful free radical-fighting antioxidants that protect skin cells from oxidative stress and related damage. Furthermore, research has shown that drinking green tea on a regular basis reduces inflammatory compounds in the skin.

#3) Wear Sunscreen Lotion

Whether you’re at the beach or lounging on your patio, apply sunscreen lotion to your exposed to skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), only about 14% of men and 30% of women regularly wear sunscreen lotion. Unfortunately, this leaves them vulnerable to skincare problems like sunburn as well as an increased risk of skin cancer.

#4) Exfoliate Weekly

A facial cleanser alone isn’t enough to thoroughly clean your skin. You need an exfoliating agent to remove the stubborn oil, dirt and debris that’s embedded deep inside your pores. This is why most professional dermatologists recommend exfoliating about once a week.

#5) Use a Moisturizing Facial Mask

You can protect your face from dryness by using a moisturizing facial mask. Available at most health and beauty stores, moisturizing facial masks contain a proprietary blend of ingredients that hydrate and replenish your face with moisture and beneficial nutrients.

#6) Monitor Humidity Level

If you don’t already own one, invest in a humidity reading device for your home. Using this device, you can monitor the humidity level inside your home, revealing whether the air is dry or moist. If the humidity level drops below 40%, it may contribute to dry skin, in which case you should use a humidifier to increase it.

#7) Don’t Overuse Alcohol-Based Skincare Products

Skincare products containing alcohol are effective at treating and preventing acne, but they can dry out your skin if you them too frequently. Therefore, you shouldn’t include them in their regular skincare regimen. Only use alcohol-based products as a temporary solution to acne.
