5 Reasons Your Cellulite Won’t Go Away

Are you battling a chronic case of cellulite? Also known as adipsosis edematosa, it’s an all-too-common condition from which millions of women suffer. In fact, statistics show that up to 98% of women will develop cellulite at some point during their life. While cellulite often fades when the appropriate steps are taken, many women struggle with it for years or even decades. If this founds familiar, you should consider if one of the following problems are contributing to your chronic, persistent cellulite.

#1) You’re Spending Too Much Time Tanning

There’s nothing wrong with going outdoors to enjoy the midday sun, but you should avoid long-term exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV light damages the skin while contributing to wrinkles and early aging in the process. Furthermore, it causes the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. As these fibers begin to break down, it increases the risk of cellulite.

#2) You’re Treating It With Moisturizing Creams or Lotions

Applying a moisturizing cream or lotion to your skin can protect it from dryness. It won’t, however, have any noticeable effect on your cellulite. Cellulite is simply the herniation of subcutaneous fat below the skin. Whether your skin is moist or dry, it can still develop cellulite. So, don’t assume that a moisturizing cream or lotion will eliminate or otherwise improve the appearance of your cellulite.

#3) You’re Eating the Wrong Foods

Dieting isn’t the only risk factor of cellulite, though it certainly plays a role in this otherwise common skin condition. People who are obese or overweight are more likely to develop cellulite than their counterparts who maintain a healthy weight. To reduce the appearance of cellulite, you should follow a low-fat, low-sugar diet. Both fat — specifically saturated fat and trans fat — as well as sugar contribute to body fat. By limiting your consumption of high-fat and high-sugar foods, you’ll promote a thinner, leaner figure that discourages the formation of cellulite.

#4) You’re Smoking

Smoking doesn’t just increase the risk of lung cancer, as well as other respiratory diseases; it also damages your skin. Specifically, the toxins in cigarette smoke cause the collagen fibers of your skin to break down. When this happens, subcutaneous fat is more likely to herniate upwards, thereby causing cellulite.

#5) You’re Stressed

If you’re stressed, you may have trouble getting rid of your cellulite. This is because psychological stress causes a hormonal imbalance in your body, which affects the strength and production of your skin’s collagen fibers. It’s impossible to prevent stress altogether, but engaging in relaxation techniques like deep breathing and yoga can help you control your stress levels.
