5 Common Misconceptions About Cellulite
Cellulite, also known as adiposis edematosa and dermopanniculosis deformans is a common skin condition that’s characterized by the herniation of fat under the skin. As the fatty tissue herniates upwards, it creates the appearance of skin dimpling and nodularity. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bad information out there on the topic of cellulite. To help clear up some of this misinformation, we’ve created a list of the top five misconceptions about cellulite.
#1) Only Women Get Cellulite
Although it’s more common among women, men can develop cellulite as well. Statistics show that about 10% of all adult males have cellulite. And like their female counterparts, rates of cellulite are usually higher among men as they age.
#2) Creams Can Eliminate Cellulite
Wouldn’t it be great if you could rub a cream on your skin to eliminate cellulite? While there are dozens of cellulite creams, lotions and other beauty products, they generally offer little or no benefit. They can help supplement your skin with moisture or nutrients, but they won’t eliminate your cellulite.
#3) Only Overweight People Develop Cellulite
Weight is certainly a risk factor in the formation of cellulite. People who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop this skin condition than people who maintain a healthy weight. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that only overweight people develop cellulite. Anyone, regardless of weight, can develop this skin condition. There are many risk factors of cellulite, only one of which is body weight. Others include hormones, genetics, physical activity (or lack thereof) and even the use of certain medications.
#4) Toxins Cause Cellulite
We’re exposed to a plethora of toxins in our daily life. From the food we eat to the air breathe, our environment is riddled with toxic chemicals and compounds. While toxins can affect certain aspects your health, however, they do not contribute to cellulite. Going back to the basics of this condition, cellulite is the result of fat being pushed through the upper layers of collagen fibers and connective tissue under the skin. In no way is it related to the presence of toxins.
#5) There’s No Way to Treat Cellulite
This couldn’t be further from the truth. Creams and lotions may offer little or no value, but there are still effective solutions for dealing with cellulite. Radio Frequency (RF), Infrared (IR) and Vacuum procedures, for instance, have been shown to reduce cellulite. When used in conjunction with dieting and exercise, you can rid cellulite from your body.
